Off-Roading and Fine Dining: Our Expert Tips to Enjoy Both

Aug. 31 2021 Miscellaneous By Bay Marine

Carving up your favorite trails from the seat of ATVs in Ontario can work up quite the appetite. However, chances are that you don’t realize how good you can still eat, even if you’re halfway through a 50-mile trail. Rather than locating the nearest restaurant or food truck, try toughing it out by cooking up a delicious off-road meal for yourself! Read on for some of Bay Marine’s best tips on how to make the most of fine dining – off-road style.

Always Pack Necessities

Being able to feed yourself a decent meal on the trail requires careful planning and diligent research. This includes weighing factors such as how much extra weight you want to carry, or if food will even last long enough to make it to the next mealtime. Of course, you should always bring necessities, such as water and the following:

Hand sanitizer – you’ve got to keep those hands clean!

Recyclable utensils, plates, and food containers.

Trash bags to carry your waste until you encounter a trash receptacle.

    Aluminum foil for meal prep.

Quick Considerations

When it comes to off-road meal prep, non-perishables reign supreme. For other food items, consider how well they can handle being stowed away during a long and bumpy ride. For example, that loaf of bread may seem appealing before you depart but it’s sure to get squished by lunch time. Also, outdoor dining doesn’t need to equal bland food. Pack your favorite rubs and seasonings – they go a long way towards creating restaurant-level flavor!

Off-Road Cooking

Nothing satisfies a tummy quite like a warm meal. Even if your favorite trails don’t have microwaves or ovens, you can still cook up something hot for yourself.

If your trail permits open flames, then try building a campfire. Once you have a flame, then you can wrap your food in aluminum foil and allow it to cook to completion.

Check your local or online vendors for portable stoves.

Kill two birds with one stone by heating up your food while you ride! How? Simply wrap your food in multiple layers of aluminum foil, secure it to your engine, and keep doing what you love. As you drive your ATV, the aluminum foil will distribute heat from the engine evenly throughout your food while also keeping it safe from contaminants.

Menu Suggestions

Before you set out, consider tailoring your “menu” based on the time of day that you’ll be riding. Allow us to provide some ideas for every meal:

Breakfast: bagels with cream cheese, fresh avocados, and oatmeal (all it needs is boiling water).

Lunch/Dinner: sandwiches, canned beans, dehydrated meals, and tinfoil meals (meat and veggies that can be wrapped up in aluminum foil and cooked together).

Snacks: granola bars, beef jerky, trail mix, string cheese, and dried fruit.

Days filled with excitement await you along Ontario’s many scenic trails. And, as we’ve learned here, you can spend all day exploring the wilderness without sacrificing a good, hearty meal.
