Before you leave for your snowmobile excursion, there are a number of things you should bring and do to prepare.
1. Check the Weather
Nothing can put your snowmobile in danger like a bad storm. Although Ontario snowmobiles are generally built well and can withstand wind, rain, and snow, storms still make conditions dangerous.
When a storm rolls through, visibility can be limited, and snow can move around, making snowmobile paths unsafe. Before you leave for your trip, ensure that you know what weather is headed your way.
2. Let Others Know Your Plan
Of course, you hope that you never end up stranded or in a dangerous situation while snowmobiling. But in the unlikely event that you do need help, you’ll want to make sure that someone knows where to find you.
Map out your trip, and let a family member or friend know where you intend on going and when you plan to get back. If you haven’t returned when you said you would, your friend can let the authorities know so they can begin looking for you.
Letting someone know your planned location can mean the difference between life and death in the event that something goes wrong.
3. Get your Snowmobile Serviced
Ontario snowmobiles go through a lot of wear and tear, so it is always a good idea to have your machine thoroughly inspected before going out on an excursion. Scheduling a service visit is an easy way to ensure your snowmobile will work properly throughout the whole trip.
4. Dress and Pack Appropriately
Even if you are only intending on a short snowmobile excursion, you’ll still want to bring the proper clothing and supplies. Don’t leave home without the following items:
- Clothes for layering
- Extra food and water
- A helmet
- Warm gloves
- Waterproof boots
- An extra pair of socks
- Glasses or goggles
- Waterproof matches
- Extra gas
- Snowmobile tools
- A map
- First-aid kit
- Emergency flares
